“Build a house?”
My suggestion was received with trepidation by my bride-to-be. The last home we built was quite a challenge. The previous project was 1200 miles away, or a 19-hour drive. Just a little more difficulty added to the WY project. The results were spectacular. The process, tiring. She was right: Why would anyone consider doing this again?
There was something in me that knew our relationship was in a different place. We were different, our lives were different. After all, the kids had all gone off to college. We, or at least I, was ready for the "downsize." My idea of a downsize was space, and economics, which proved to be a tall order. We adapt.
The location was easy, as we love our neighborhood. We walk our dog, Cotton, 5-6 times a week. He loves going for a walk. We love taking him! We get to chat about our day, and current events. We eventually found a lot for sale!
Are we ready for this adventure? Yes. The owner of the lot offered to include the plans he had developed with a local architect. The owner had determined he needed more space. I was familiar with the architect, and liked the work I was familiar with. The plans were perfect - they reminded me of the floorplan of the WY project. I showed the plans to Dina; she loved them too! This has already developed faster and smoother than the WY project. I thought building a house was supposed to be more difficult. That was my experience and what I had heard.
This project here has been a wonderful experience. My work has kept me occupied this year; I could not be more involved if I wanted to. This has led Dina to handle much of the heavy lifting for the move to our new home this fall. Dina has also done most of the design work. She has done so much for our new home.
There it is! WE are not just building a house; We are building a home. A home comes with attention to details, and love. Now I get it! It's much easier when WE work together. A house becomes a "home" when love is added. Thank you, Dina!
